Guidelines for Design of Intakes for Hydroelectric Plants examines the hydraulic and structural considerations applicable to the sound environmental design of hydropower intakes. The designer of a hydroelectric facility must consider the protection and preservation of fish, wildlife, recreational opportunities, and environmental quality, while at the same time ensuring that the plant operates at maximum efficiency. In this volume, the traditional view of intake design is expanded to include conveyances upstream from the pressure conduit, as well as the inlet to the pressure conduit supplying water to the turbine.
Topics include: intake types and features; hydraulic design; the forebay; trashracks and gates; structural analysis and design; fish passage and protection; ice; sedimentation; environmental factors; hydraulic models, and the evaluation of existing intakes. A glossary of hydropower terms is also included.
Factoring in years of experience by both engineering and environmental specialists, this book is intended for use by planners and designers of intake structures for hydroelectric plants.
